Prospective multicenter trial of capsule endoscopy in patients with chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea and other signs and symptoms (CEDAP-Plus Study)

2007

Background On the basis of the published data, capsule endoscopy cannot be recommended in patients whose only symptom is chronic abdominal pain. The present study therefore focused on the diagnostic yield of capsule endoscopy in patients with chronic abdominal pain who were also suffering from additional symptoms. Patients and methods A total of 50 patients with chronic abdominal pain, plus other symptoms singly or in combination were enrolled in this prospective multicenter trial. The "plus" symptoms or signs consisted of weight loss (> 10 % of body weight), inflammation shown by laboratory tests, chronic anemia, or suspected mid-gastrointestinal bleeding. Chronic diarrhea was recorded if …

Panintestinal capsule endoscopy in patients with celiac disease

2021

INTRODUCTION Capsule endoscopy has proven its utility in diagnosing villous atrophy and lymphoma in patients with celiac disease. Recently, a novel capsule endoscopy system was introduced which enables the examination of the small and large bowel. So far, it has not been evaluated in patients with celiac disease. OBJECTIVE The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the novel panintestinal capsule endoscopy system in patients with celiac disease. METHODS Eleven patients with histologically proven celiac disease (Marsh 0-IV), who underwent a panintestinal capsule endoscopy between March 2018 and April 2019 at our institution, were included in this retrospective single-center study. Semantic and topological classification of images in magnetically guided capsule endoscopy

2012

International audience; Magnetically-guided capsule endoscopy (MGCE) is a nascent technology with the goal to allow the steering of a capsule endoscope inside a water filled stomach through an external magnetic field. We developed a classification cascade for MGCE images with groups images in semantic and topological categories. Results can be used in a post-procedure review or as a starting point for algorithms classifying pathologies. The first semantic classification step discards over-/under-exposed images as well as images with a large amount of debris. The second topological classification step groups images with respect to their position in the upper gastrointestinal tract (mouth, es…

Diagnostik eines hochmalignen B-Zell-Lymphoms des Dünndarms mit der Kapselendoskopie

2003

Wireless capsule endoscopy is a new diagnostic procedure to detect diseases of the small bowel, in particular in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. We report on a 76-year-old patient who presented at our hospital with signs of gastrointestinal bleeding and hypochromic anaemia. Bidirectional endoscopy, push enteroscopy, angiography as well as small bowel barium enema rendered no pathologic findings. Wireless capsule endoscopy demonstrated a polypous space in the cantral area of the small bowel. Subsequent intraoperative endoscopy revealed a subtotal stenosing tumour of the upper jejunum which was resected. Based on the histology a high-grade B-Cell lymphoma was diagnosed. The p…

Taenia Species, Uterine Branches and Capsule Endoscopy

2018

Hamada et al. show, in their article, several proglottids of an adult stage of a Taenia species in the small bowel of a woman by capsule endoscopy (1). One of the images clearly shows a gravid proglottid that allows the view of the characteristic Taenia uterus morphology, with a central axis and a n

Double-Balloon Enteroscopy: Preliminary Experience in Patients with Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding or Chronic Abdominal Pain

2003

Background and Study Aims: Even in the era of capsule endoscopy, diseases of the small bowel are sometimes difficult to diagnose, and endoscopic treatment is not possible without surgical laparotomy. The new method of carrying out enteroscopy using a double-balloon technique allows not only diagnostic but also therapeutic endoscopic interventions for lesions in the small bowel. Preliminary experience with this new method is reported here. Patients and Methods: Between the end of March 2003 and August 2003, eight patients (four women, four men; mean age 59 ± 23 years, range 20 - 90) with chronic gastrointestinal bleeding or abdominal pain, or both, underwent enteroscopy using the double-bal…

Extraction of Entrapped Capsules from the Small Bowel by Means of Push-and-Pull Enteroscopy with the Double-Balloon Technique

2005

The new technique of push-and-pull enteroscopy using the double-balloon technique (double-balloon enteroscopy) makes it possible to remove swallowed foreign bodies causing intestinal obstruction deep in the small bowel without the need for surgical laparotomy. This report describes two cases of enteroscopic removal of entrapped capsules. In one patient with acute recurrent intestinal bleeding and recurrent abdominal pain, Crohn's disease had been suspected on capsule endoscopy. The second patient, with known Crohn's disease, was suffering from abdominal pain and underwent capsule endoscopy for investigation of the small bowel. Prior enteroclysis had not revealed stenoses in either patient. …

Influence of Patient Selection on the Outcome of Capsule Endoscopy in Patients With Chronic Gastrointestinal Bleeding

2005

Background: In chronic gastrointestinal bleeding, success rates in the range of 48% to 76% have been reported for diagnosing clear bleeding sources using capsule endoscopy. The influence of patient selection on the numbers of positive findings yielded by capsule endoscopy is as yet unclear. Methods: From April 2001 to June 2003, capsule endoscopy was carried out in 74 of a total of 127 patients (58%) who presented for capsule endoscopy with a high suspicion of gastrointestinal bleeding in the small-bowel region. Seventy of the 74 patients were included in the analysis. This group of patients was divided into a study group (32 patients) and a post-study group (38 patients), and the two group…
